Porcelain Veneers

There are two types of veneers: Porcelain and Acrylic

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are a new covering over the entire face of the tooth.  It's probably easiest to think about a porcelain veneer the same way you think about false fingernails.  The porcelain veneer is a thin piece of custom-made porcelain designed specifically for your mouth and bonded into place.  These are very conservative treatments, as they require very little tooth modification, and most of your original tooth structure stays intact.  A dental laboratory makes the porcelain veneer to the exact specifications that you require.  We can match almost any shade, shape or contour and porcelain veneers do not fade or yellow over time.  As with any dental restoration, porcelain veneers may chip or wear out over time, but most of our patients with veneers on their front teeth are able to safely bite into apples, eat corn on the cob or ribs without any problem!  It's truly a great, beautiful way to perfect your smile.

Here's a quick example of what veneers can do for you.

How do I know if I should get porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are great if your teeth are discolored, damaged or if there are spaces between your teeth that you'd like to close.  Porcelain veneers aren't right for everyone and there are some limitations as to what they can accomplish. Before we decide for sure that this is the right treatment for you, we'd love to talk to you more about what's available.

What can I expect?

Porcelain veneers usually take 2 appointments in our office. After getting you numb, we prepare your teeth for veneers and take an impression of the teeth to send to the dental laboratory. It usually takes the lab 2 weeks to make your porcelain veneers, so  we make an acrylic veneer for you to wear until your porcelain veneers are finished and ready for bonding. At the second appointment, we carefully check the veneers for accurate fit, shade and shape. We take off the acrylic veneers and bond the porcelain veneers to your teeth. You do not need to be numb for the second appointment and you will usually be able to eat on the veneers immediately.

Take a step by step look at the proceedure.

Acrylic Veneers

An acrylic veneer is a lot like a porcelain veneer. It is a very thin piece of durable, beautiful acrylic that is custom made in our office to the exact shade and specifications for your smile and is bonded to your teeth. Acrylic veneers are very conservative in that they require the removal of very little or no enamel and preserve most of your natural tooth. However, they are also extremely cosmetic in that they can restore the ideal shapes of your teeth. With acrylic veneers, we can lighten teeth immediately and beautifully to the exact shade that you desire. However, unlike porcelain veneers, acrylic veneers are more susceptible to chipping and fracturing over time and their color can fade or yellow over time. Nevertheless, acrylic veneers can still last for years without losing their beauty.

How do I know if I should get acrylic veneers?

The indications for getting acrylic veneers are the same as for getting porcelain veneers.  However, acrylic veneers are chosen over porcelain veneers if finances are a concern and you don't mind replacing them every couple of years.

What can I expect?

Acrylic veneers only take 1 appointment. After getting you numb, we prepare the tooth for an acrylic veneer and  bond layer after layer of acrylic to your tooth until the desired shape and shade is achieved. The acrylic is polished and sealed and you can usually eat immediately after your appointment.
