Temporomandibular Disorder - TMD

Temporomandibular Disorder - TMD

Temporomandibular disorder, or TMD, is a disorder that affects your temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Most people, when describing this disease, will incorrectly refer to their condition as “TMJ.” It is an important distinction to realize that TMJ simply refers to a joint in general, whereas TMD refers to a joint that is having problems.

TMD can result from a variety of different problems including stress and anxiety, certain medications or teeth that are not biting together properly. Sometimes orthodontic treatment can cause TMD.

TMD can be mild to severe and it can either be easily treated or very difficult to overcome. In our office, we have become quite proficient at diagnosing and treating certain types of TMD. We would be happy to meet with you to discuss your symptoms, the severity of your condition, the length of time that this has persisted as well as any available options for you. Solutions to TMD range from night guard appliances to medications and we can talk about which treatment, if any, is appropriate for you.
